These photos were taken at a landscape lighting project we completed in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on Scenic Valley Drive. There are three separate systems: One in the front yard and two in the backyard separated by the waterfall feature in the photos.
On this particular job the homeowner wanted to add perimeter lighting in the surrounding wooded areas to help create a more secure feeling and more usable space at night. The up-lights on the trees in the woods really help fill in the otherwise dark spaces and also creates a mystical ambiance. We did this with the Lightcraft brand in-ground well lights with 20 watt PAR36 bulbs. These fixtures are low profile yet produce just the right amount of light spread and distance for the tall trees.
Smaller ornamental trees were up-lit with Kichler 15384AZT mini spotlights with 20 watt MR16 bulbs. The pine trees in the photos were cross-lit with Kichler 15390AZT accent lights with 20 watt PAR36 bulbs. Cross-lighting is a technique that uses two lights placed accross from each other and pointed in the same general direction at an object. This technique helps fill in shadows and dark spots created by irregular shapes. Since pine and spruce trees are very irregular in shape, this technique works very well. Also, pine and spruce trees tend to absorb lots of light due to their shape, and having two lights helps light the tree up properly.
In the backyard we also used the Kichler 15439 path light in the Olde Brick finish to match the brickwork on the home and patio. We used these lights to light a walkway from the front yard around the side to the back. These lights also were used to light up the stairway to the patio and to fill in some dark spaces from the flower bed areas. This type of light would be considered a "down-light", which means it casts a nice warm circle of light onto the ground without any glare into your eyes. Very soft yet extremely usefull for leading your guests from one area to another. Also very good for lighting up your low level plantings and flowers in the beds.
In the front yard we again used the well lights to surround the home in the woods and up-light some ornamental trees. We also used the same path-lights to light the front paver sidewalk and front flower beds. For the columns on the front door we chose the Kichler 15384AZT mini spotlight because it allowed us to aim the light perfectly without alot of side glare from the light bulb.
